On December 9, the Houthis issued a statement saying that if food and medicine could not enter the Gaza Strip, any ship bound for Israel would become a "legitimate target" of the group's armed forces (regardless of nationality, regardless of whether the ship's ownership was linked to Israel). The group warned that all international shipping companies should avoid dealing with Israeli ports due to the safety of maritime navigation.

Yahya Sarrea, a spokesman for the Houthis, said in a statement broadcast on television that the group had attacked the tanker with rockets after its crew refused to respond to all warnings.

Sareya vowed that the Houthis would continue to block ships bound for Israeli ports until Israel allows food and medical aid into Gaza.

A US official told Reuters that the attack on the tanker "Sterling" took place at around 2100 GMT on the 11th (Beijing time at 5:00 on the 12th), about 60 nautical miles north of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Another U.S. official said the Starinda was able to move under its own power for hours after the attack.

"No U.S. ships were in the vicinity at the time of the attack, but the USS Mason responded to the distress call from the USS Strinda and is currently providing assistance," U.S. Central Command said in a statement posted on social media platform X.

According to the UK Maritime Trade Action Office (UKMTO), a fire broke out on a ship near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, 15 miles west of the port of Moka in Yemen, and all crew on board the affected vessel are safe.

Geir Belsnes, CEO of J. Ludwig Mowinckels Rederi, the operator of the Strinda, confirmed the attack took place, according to the Associated Press. The Strinda was on its way from Malaysia to the Suez Canal.

The US military said in a statement that the attack caused fire and damage, but no injuries.

A spokesman for the Houthis said the group had successfully blocked the passage of several boats in recent days in a show of support for the Palestinians.

At least six cargo ships have been attacked in the Red Sea since November, which has seriously challenged the stability of trade channels in the Red Sea.

At present, the safety of cargo ships in the Red Sea has aroused great concern of the international community. The countries called for enhanced international cooperation to jointly address security threats in the Red Sea.

In order to ensure the safety of cargo ships sailing in the Red Sea, the multinational Joint Task Force will jointly strengthen patrols and vigilance, and take necessary actions to protect cargo ships from the threat of attack.

As an important trade channel, the Red Sea is of great significance to global trade. The efforts of all countries will further strengthen the security and stability of the Red Sea and ensure the smooth flow of international trade.
