As leaders in the energy transformation of the shipping industry, both parties believe that joint action will help accelerate the green transformation of the shipping industry, and only by learning from each other can they go faster and further.
Cma CGM and Maersk have set a net zero emissions target for their shipping operations, identified scalable solutions that can have an impact this decade, and each has taken ambitious steps to decarbonize shipping.
Maersk ordered ships that can use biomass/electricity to methanol as power, while CMA CGM ordered ships powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), which can also use the green product of LNG, namely biomass/electricity to methane, and CMA CGM also ordered container ships that can use biomass/electricity to methanol as power.
These two categories of fuels are the most mature solutions available, but both parties anticipate that the future Marine fuel mix will be augmented by other fuels developed later.
An ambitious collaboration to develop the future of fuels for the shipping industry
The two sides will strengthen cooperation to jointly develop alternative green fuels for container ships, including:
1.Develop high-standard, sustainable alternative green fuels, including relevant greenhouse gas and full life cycle analysis, and assist in setting the framework for green methane and green methanol large-scale production
2.Develop and maintain operational standards for the safety and fuelling of green methanol vessels and accelerate the preparation of biomass/electromethanol fuelling and supply in major ports around the world
3.Continue to explore joint research and development of other net zero emission solutions, such as new alternative fuels such as ammonia, or innovative technologies for ships

In addition, both Maersk and CMA CGM believe that regulation has a fundamental role to play in ensuring the decarbonization of the industry. Both sides warmly welcomed the recent results of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee, which adopted the IMO Strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ships to 2023 and strengthened targets for reducing harmful gases.
Maersk and CMA CGM are committed to jointly advocating for and supporting IMO member States in taking ambitious measures to achieve the highest attainable decarbonisation targets. Both sides welcomed measures such as the EU's "Fit for 55" and the US Inflation Reduction Act, which have helped to stimulate market demand for green shipping solutions.
Cma CGM and Maersk confirm that they plan to work with relevant regulatory authorities and invite other shipping companies interested in participating to contribute to a strong and sustainable international greenhouse gas regulatory framework. From a company perspective, establishing such a framework is a prerequisite for reducing the shipping industry's carbon emissions and ensuring a level playing field for business globally.

Morten Bo Christiansen, head of Energy Transition at Maersk, said: "We have moved far beyond the 'chicken and egg' discussion about green fuels and green ships. Now the green fuel supply challenge is growing exponentially. Two years ago, only one methanol-powered container ship was ordered worldwide, and today, five major container shipping lines have ordered and refit more than 120 methanol-powered container ships. Innovative companies like C2X will play an extremely important role in the coming years to increase green fuel capacity in terms of speed and scale. We are pleased to see A.P. Muller Holdings and Maersk making such a meaningful investment."
In addition, Maersk works with several customers to provide them with ECO Delivery solutions. On September 6, the company announced a 2023-2024 agreement with Amazon under which 20,000 FEU of Amazon cargo will be transported using ECO Delivery sea freight services, which will reduce 44,600 tons of CO2 emissions. On September 14, Maersk signed an agreement with South Korea's LX Pantos, and in the second half of this year, all European goods will be transported using this ecological and environmentally friendly transport solution. Since the company officially launched ECO Delivery products and services in 2019, customer demand has tripled annually, with more than 200 customers worldwide using the service.
