Canal revenues are one of Egypt's main sources of national revenue and foreign exchange reserves.
In March 2021, the giant container ship Changci ran aground on the canal, causing a blockage of nearly a week. The disruption caused shipping delays to cost billions of dollars, with Egypt costing $12 million to $15 million a day. In 2022, the canal brought Egypt $8 billion in transit fees.
